Zelda Lategan is a South African born on the Cape Flats hailing from Bonteheuwel.  As many know, Bonteheuwel was one of the hubs for many political activists.  She matriculated at Arcadia S.S. School and did a few short courses to start earning a much-needed salary immediately.

Many years after she matriculated, she went back to Arcadia to fulfil her social responsibility by starting the Alumni of which she is the Secretary. After many years of doing community work and trying to uplift less privileged people, especially in her hometown, Zelda started an NPO called Angels United Helping Hands.  She is the co-founder and Chairperson of the organisation.

Zelda has become very active in the community where she resides, ward 14.  She was elected as the Chairperson of the Rustdal Ratepayers and Residents Association and served the community well over 5 years in this capacity. Zelda works hand in hand with the ward councillor ensuring that her community get the best service delivery.  She assists with all queries of COCT and related issues. She deals with public participation and keeps the community up to date with developments in their immediate and neighbouring areas and logging most of the C3 on behalf of the community.

During the covid19 pandemic, she broadened her horizon by starting a ” Rustdal Can”.  In doing so she could assist community members who were affected by unemployment. It also allowed her to proceed with her charity work during the lockdown. She did this all whilst being permanently employed to earn her daily bread.  Zelda describes herself as a mother, grandmother, and wife, not forgetting a loyal and committed daughter to her 88-year-old Queen of her heart and a sibling to 9.
