COVID-19: LOCKDOWN LEVEL ONE
Last night President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation regarding the decision to move the country to Lockdown Level One. Most notably, a decision has been made to allow indoor gatherings of 750 people and outdoor gatherings of 2000 people.
It is no coincidence that this decision comes at the onset of municipal election campaigning. The choice to allow larger gatherings at this time is concerning to the Credible Alternative First Movement, especially because the Health Minister Joe Phaahla said in August that we could face the fourth wave of the Coronavirus in November this year. Some medical experts have predicted that the fourth wave would hit South Africa at the start of the festive season.
The CA1st Movement disagrees with the President’s decision to move the country to Lockdown Level One, especially the increase in gathering numbers. It is clear that the interests of political parties are paramount and that the people of South Africa are viewed as voting fodder. This perturbs us as the President mentioned that election campaigning poses the greatest threat to the people with regard to the continued spread of Coronavirus. How is it logical to state this while creating the opportunity for the virus to spread at political gatherings? We do not want to see the people of this country as collateral damage caught in the middle of political campaigns.
We view President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision as a shortsighted, ill-judged and selfish act that serves to appease political parties for the sake of rallying. We will not make use of this opportunity to hold big gatherings or rallies to campaign in Cape Town. Protecting the lives of our people is crucial and we will not risk the people of Cape Town’s health and safety in the hopes of receiving votes.
